Commander Format Update: Unbans and Insights
Hey everyone! Gavin Verhey here from the Commander Format Panel. Let’s dive into some exciting changes in the Commander format, particularly the recent unbanning of two notable cards: Biorhythm and Lutri, the Spellchaser.
What’s New?
Biorhythm has long been a card with immense potential. It can instantly swing the game in your favor if your opponents have no creatures. While we had reservations about its power, we’ve seen other high-impact spells, like Worldfire, shake up gameplay without causing too many issues. We believe Biorhythm can create memorable moments if it doesn’t become too common in decks.
Lutri, the Spellchaser had an unusual history. Though not a powerful card on its own, its main issue was as a companion. If legal, every blue-red deck would likely include it, which felt unfair to players without access. So, we’re introducing a new rule: Lutri can’t be a companion, but it’s back in the game as a normal card. This strikes a balance so everyone can enjoy its fun, spell-copying ability.
Card Discussions
We also talked about three other cards—Sundering Titan, Iona, Shield of Emeria, and Griselbrand—but decided they should stay banned for now. Here’s why:
Sundering Titan could disrupt players’ mana bases unreasonably. While the game has changed, it could still lead to frustration.
Iona is a powerhouse but stops players from casting spells, potentially ruining their day.
Griselbrand is loved by players for its excitement but poses a significant risk of game domination.
