Moscow is ramping up its support for India’s leadership of BRICS, the group of emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, plus five new members set to join. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised India’s agenda, noting it’s highly relevant to pressing global issues like counter-terrorism and energy security.
In an interview with TV BRICS International Network, Lavrov highlighted India’s strong focus on fighting terrorism, especially in regions like Afghanistan, which has been a hotbed for such activities. He stressed the importance of our cooperation in the United Nations to draft a global counter-terrorism convention, even though consensus is still a work in progress.
Energy security is another key area under discussion. Lavrov pointed out the shifting landscape of global energy influenced by the Trump administration’s actions. He argued that these developments have serious implications for countries around the world.
Additionally, Lavrov noted that India is prioritizing information and communication technology (ICT) security. He mentioned an upcoming AI summit in India, where Russia will be actively involved. This focus on AI is crucial as countries are still developing regulations around its military use. He warned that while countries have the right to determine their military strategies with AI, some nations are trying to centralize control, which could threaten sovereignty.
Looking ahead, Lavrov outlined that past BRICS leadership has laid the groundwork for initiatives aimed at supporting a stable global economy. He believes this momentum will continue under India’s chairmanship. Despite ongoing discussions about reforming major financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, he emphasized that Russia isn’t calling for their dissolution but rather for fair representation.
In an era of increasing geopolitical tension, Lavrov underscored that Russia is not abandoning the US dollar. He noted that US policies have weaponized the dollar, impacting countries it considers adversaries.
As global dynamics shift, BRICS remains a platform for collaboration among emerging markets, addressing vital issues that affect their collective futures.
