Deele Community Anglers CLG has launched a new initiative called “Peacebuilding Through the Environment.” This program focuses on climate action and community engagement across Donegal, funded by the PEACEPLUS Programme.
With a budget of €200,000, this initiative is one of 32 projects under Donegal’s larger PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan, which totals €7.6 million. It kicked off at Mongorry Lake near Raphoe and aims to unite community members in environmental stewardship.
At the launch, Councillor Paul Canning, the Chair of the Donegal PEACEPLUS Partnership, expressed optimism about the project. He noted that it represents a journey towards a more inclusive and sustainable Donegal. “Local environmental care fosters strong community ties,” he said.
Through this program, participants will engage in hands-on activities to improve biodiversity, manage water quality, and protect local heritage. The initiative seeks to connect schools and community groups to tackle environmental challenges unique to their areas.
The project addresses key issues like biodiversity and wellbeing. It promotes cross-community collaboration and aims for lasting impacts on climate resilience in Donegal. David Scott, chair of Deele Community Anglers, emphasized the opportunity this program creates for environmental improvements and community involvement.
Statistics show that community-driven environmental initiatives can significantly boost local engagement. According to a recent report from the Pew Research Center, 70% of people are more likely to participate in environmental efforts when they feel a sense of community.
Overall, “Peacebuilding Through the Environment” aspires to instill a shared responsibility in protecting Donegal’s natural beauty, encouraging diverse groups to come together for a common cause.
