The NHL is back at the Winter Olympics! After a long 12 years, fans will see their favorite players compete. The excitement in Milan is electric as teams prepare for the games.
The league skipped the 2022 Olympics due to the pandemic and didn’t send its players to the 2018 Olympics, citing that it would disrupt the season. But now, for the first time since 2010, each of the 32 NHL teams will have representatives at the Games.
Milan is ready to host the tournament. Team USA kicks off its journey against Latvia on Thursday, with Slovakia facing Finland on opening day. The atmosphere is high, and IOC Sports Director Pierre Ducrey expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We’re very excited they are coming back.”
Getting the NHL players involved took a lot of effort. Last year’s construction delays and concerns about ice safety at the arenas led to worries about whether players would participate. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly even hinted that they wouldn’t send players if safety was in question. Luckily, the NHL sent experts to assess the venues, and everything checked out well. “The ice was a little bit beat up,” said Team USA coach Mike Sullivan, but overall, they’re happy to be there.
A notable aspect of this Olympic participation is the pressure on Team USA. They haven’t claimed a gold medal since the famous “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. Meanwhile, Canada has won gold in the last two Olympics with NHL players, so they’re the favorites again this year.
Sidney Crosby, a star player for Canada, acknowledged the expectations weighing on the team, saying it’s important to stay focused on what they need to do to win.
This year, twelve nations will compete, grouped into three sets of four. The competition starts with a round-robin, allowing the top teams to advance to the quarterfinals. The final will take place on February 22, 2026.
In a time when social media buzzes with updates from fans worldwide, this resurgence of NHL players in the Olympics shows the ongoing love for hockey. User reactions reflect excitement, anticipation, and camaraderie, as sports fans come together to support their teams.
As we enter this thrilling chapter of the Winter Olympics, the combination of history, competition, and passion will make for unforgettable moments.
