A judge has decided to keep former New York Jets player Darron Lee in jail without bond. He is facing a serious charge: first-degree murder, linked to the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpétuo, in Tennessee.
The ruling came from Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tori Smith after Lee’s arrest last week. He faces another charge for tampering with or fabricating evidence. His next court date is set for March 9.
Detective Brian Lockhart provided details during the court hearing. He mentioned that the couple had been living in a rented home for about ten days before the incident. The initial autopsy, though not yet fully released, suggests that Perpétuo may have died from blunt force trauma.
On February 5, first responders found her unresponsive while responding to a call in Ooltewah. Lee suggested that she might have fallen in the shower, but there were signs of trauma that contradicted his claim. Investigators reported multiple injuries on her body, including stab wounds and bruising, indicating a violent struggle. Further examination revealed severe injuries to her head and neck.
Interestingly, blood appeared to have been cleaned from various areas in the house, but remnants could still be detected. Lee himself had injuries and evidence of blood, raising more questions about his account of events.
District Attorney Coty Wamp indicated that this case might qualify for the death penalty, although that decision has yet to be made. Wamp argued in court that Lee’s explanation of how the situation unfolded does not hold up, especially given his criminal history, which includes probation for previous violent offenses.
Lee, 31, once a promising linebacker at Ohio State, was drafted by the Jets in 2016. He played for the Jets, Kansas City, and Buffalo over several seasons. His athletic career had notable highs, including being the defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl.
