Assam Rifles Goes Local with Dog Breeds
The Assam Rifles is stepping up its game by introducing Indian dog breeds into its squads. This decision supports the government’s vision of self-reliance, known as Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Currently, they have begun with the Tangkhul Hui breed from Manipur. Starting in April, they will also bring in the Kombai breed from Tamil Nadu. Full integration of these breeds into the force is expected by March 2027. The Jorhat-based Rifles Dog Training Centre (ARDTC) will handle the training. They already manage 104 dogs and 174 handlers through various training programs.
According to Lt Col Alok Palei, Officer Commanding of ARDTC, this initiative stems from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s vision of incorporating more Indian breeds into paramilitary forces. The Assam Rifles is following directives to find local breeds suited for service. Currently, the force uses several breeds, including Labradors, German Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois, alongside the newly inducted Tangkhul Hui.
Interestingly, the Assam Rifles has a total capacity of 344 dogs but currently operates with 253, supported by over 1,200 trained handlers. The training at ARDTC covers essentials like obedience, tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection. Handlers receive advanced training at specialized facilities in Bengaluru and Meerut.
In a notable success, the dog squad played a crucial role in seizing a significant drug haul from Myanmar in September 2025. Future plans aim to broaden the roles of these dogs to include assault, explosive detection, and potentially search-and-rescue operations in emergencies.
This shift to indigenous breeds not only boosts local wildlife but also strengthens the operational capabilities of the Assam Rifles. It reflects a growing trend in various sectors toward embracing local solutions, a movement that has gained traction in recent years as more organizations seek sustainability and community support.
