ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies kick off their 2026 home schedule with an exciting doubleheader against U of M-Dearborn. This game is significant as it’s the earliest the Golden Grizzlies have ever hosted a home game, and it’s the inaugural match at the new OU Grizz Dome.
Currently, Oakland holds a 2-3 record after participating in the DePaul Dome Tournament. Despite facing losses in their last three games, the Grizzlies started the season strong with two impressive wins. Their pitching has been a highlight, featuring a 4.40 ERA, which places them at the top of the Horizon League for now. Star pitcher Kenna Bommarito has been remarkable, posting a 0.66 ERA with 13 strikeouts and allowing only six hits in her two starts. Teammates Mary Newton and Jessica Nelson have also put in solid performances, each with ERAs under 3.00, helping the team limit opponents to three runs or fewer in three out of five games.
At the plate, Oakland’s batters have been on fire. Maggie Murphy, Storm Kentros, and Kam Troyer are all hitting above .400. This shows their offensive strength early in the season. The team also displayed power, with both Kayla Turmell and Bella Crager hitting home runs during the opening tournament.
Facing U of M-Dearborn marks the first matchup in history between these two programs. The Wolverines, poised to kick off their season against the Grizzlies, had a challenging 2025 with a record of 13-21-1. Led by standout hitter Kendyl Gearhart, who had a batting average of .337 and hit eight home runs last year, the Wolverines will look to start fresh in this matchup.
The doubleheader is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 13, at the OU Grizz Dome.
In the world of college sports, home games can significantly influence team morale and performance. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, home-field advantage can increase a team’s win percentage by as much as 60%. Oakland has the potential to leverage this advantage as they aim to strengthen their early-season record.
As fans gear up for the exciting day ahead, the community can look forward to cheering on their team in what promises to be a thrilling opener.
