The Sokoto State Government, with help from International Alert Nigeria, has launched a committee to kickstart the “Powering Peace through Climate Action II” project. This initiative aims to tackle climate-related security issues and foster cooperation within communities.
The committee’s formation follows a meeting on February 12, 2026, where stakeholders from peace-building and development sectors gathered to discuss pressing climate challenges.
Senior Project Officer Sanusi Audu highlighted a concerning trend: climate change is limiting grazing land and hurting agricultural productivity. This scenario places immense pressure on resources, leading to conflicts between farmers and herders. He emphasized that we can’t effectively address security issues without recognizing the influence of climate change. Sustainable peace requires strategies that take these environmental factors into account.
Vice Chairman Mustapha Umar stressed the importance of integrating climate considerations into conflict resolution strategies. He called for community outreach to raise awareness about climate resilience. This approach is key for crafting solutions that foster local ownership and participation.
Alhaji Sani Umar-Jabbi, a local leader, pointed out that ignoring the connection between climate and conflict could perpetuate issues like gender-based violence and poverty. He stressed that combatting these challenges requires collective action from the government, civil society, and citizens.
Recent research backs this view. A 2022 study by the United Nations indicated that climate change increases conflicts over resources, showing a clear connection between environmental factors and social unrest. By including climate-sensitive policies, communities can better address root causes of conflict and promote long-term stability.
Finally, committee members include representatives from various sectors, ensuring diverse perspectives contribute to the initiative. This inclusive approach aims to create solutions that build resilience and effectively tackle the intertwined issues of climate change and conflict.
