Maine Credit Unions Unite to Raise .5M in Fight Against Food Insecurity

The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger recently reported an impressive total of $1,496,116.71 raised through food and monetary donations. This amount marks a significant achievement as the campaign celebrates 35 years of addressing hunger in Maine.

Elise Baldacci, president of the Maine Credit Union League, emphasized the importance of this effort. She noted, “Behind every dollar raised is a neighbor, a family, or a child who needs reliable access to food.” This campaign showcases the power of collaboration among credit unions, demonstrating their commitment to supporting communities and those in need.

At the beginning of 2025, the campaign aimed to raise $1.35 million in recognition of its 35 years of service. Remarkably, this goal was surpassed, allowing the campaign to provide support to 298 organizations throughout the state. This effort is vital, especially during challenging times marked by funding cuts and a government shutdown.

Jen Burke, the vice president of outreach and strategic initiatives at the Maine Credit Union League, highlighted the quick and decisive action of credit unions in response to growing needs this past year. Their commitment to combating hunger reflects the core credit union philosophy of “People Helping People.”

Heather Paquette, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank, also addressed the audience, sharing updates on ongoing efforts to ensure that Mainers struggling with hunger receive the support they need.

Since its inception in 1990, Maine credit unions have contributed over $16.3 million to hunger relief efforts statewide. As fundraising continues into 2026, there is a strong commitment to not only maintain but also grow these efforts. The focus remains on collaboration with community partners to meet emerging needs and strengthen the fight against hunger in Maine.
