Starship’s Upcoming Test Flight. SpaceX is gearing up for its next big launch with its upgraded Super Heavy booster. Launch Timeline. There’s a good chance the launch could occur within the next six to eight weeks. Last year, SpaceX attempted five flights of the earlier Starship V2. There’s been ongoing discussion about making the upper stage reusable, which dates back about 15 years to the initial design phases of this heavy-lift rocket. The first stage is already designed to be fully reusable, but questions remain about reusing the upper stage, powered by two BE-3U engines.
Current Developments. Recently, Blue Origin opened a position for a Director of Reusable Upper Stage Development. This role will support a new initiative focused on making the upper stage reusable. Current estimates indicate that manufacturing a New Glenn second stage costs more than $50 million, so this could save money in the long run.
