Texas Longhorns Dominate UC Davis in Season Opener: No. 3 Baseball Team Shines

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas baseball team started its 2026 season with a bang, beating UC Davis 12-2 in a run-rule victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.

It was a big night for the Longhorns, especially for outfielders Aiden Robbins and Anthony Pack Jr. Robbins kicked things off with a two-run homer in the third inning that traveled an impressive 450 feet, giving Texas a 3-2 lead.

Robbins continued to shine, hitting an RBI double in the fifth. His contributions helped spark a four-run inning for the Longhorns, rounding out a solid opener for the team.

Pack Jr. also had an extraordinary night, going 3-for-3 at the plate. His performance tied him for the most hits by a Texas freshman in a season opener in nearly 13 years. He matched the record set by C.J. Hinojosa in 2013.

Pack Jr. was part of the action in the seventh, hitting the fourth consecutive single for Texas. His effort set up Ethan Mendoza, who ended the game early with a home run, thrilling the near-capacity crowd.

On the mound, senior Ruger Riojas was dominant. He struck out nine hitters and allowed just one run over five innings, retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced. His control was impressive, with 52 of his 78 pitches landing in the strike zone.

While UC Davis managed to score in both the first and seventh innings, they struggled against the Longhorns’ pitching staff, which limited them to six hits. Starter Noel Valdez took the loss after giving up six runs, three of which were earned.

This win also marked Texas’ ninth consecutive victory in home openers, highlighting their strong start at home. As they prepare for their next game against UC Davis on Saturday, the Longhorns are focused on building on this momentum.

Looking ahead, Texas fans can expect exciting performances as the season progresses, especially from young talents like Pack Jr. who have already made their mark. The Longhorns’ blend of experience and fresh talent could make this season one to remember.
