The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has teamed up with Bharat Taxi, a unique cooperative ride-hailing service, to improve last-mile connectivity at 11 airports, including Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This partnership aims to tackle the growing dissatisfaction with current ride services.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on February 5 and responds to public complaints about service consistency and pricing practices. The rollout will begin with selected airports, including Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and will include others like Patna and Varanasi.
Minister Amit Shah launched the app, emphasizing that it aims to provide safe, reliable transport for passengers. Vipin Kumar, AAI’s Chairman, noted that the initiative supports the government’s push for more accessible taxi services.
Bharat Taxi stands out because it operates under a cooperative model, meaning drivers are part owners, which helps ensure fair pricing without surge charges. This approach addresses frequent complaints about inflated fares during busy times.
K. Shambhavi, a Pune local and frequent traveler, expressed optimism. She believes this service will cut down waiting times and avoid the unpredictability seen with other apps.
With fixed rates based on distance and no hidden fees, Bharat Taxi aims to create more transparency. Drivers also benefit, retaining most of their earnings thanks to the cooperative’s structure. They will receive consistent payments, helping to prioritize their welfare.
This cooperative model reflects a shift toward community-driven solutions in transportation, especially in a time when ride-hailing services have faced scrutiny. According to recent data from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), the cooperative model not only aids drivers but also encourages a sense of belonging and responsibility among partners.
The introduction of Bharat Taxi’s service comes as ride-hailers like Ola and Uber navigate challenges related to compliance and fare structures. Bharat Taxi aims to establish a dependable alternative that aligns with the government’s vision for an ambitious, self-sufficient India by 2047.
