Castellanos, who turns 34 next month, will likely play first base, outfield, and serve as the designated hitter for his new team. The Phillies released Castellanos after trying to trade him for months. With one year and $20 million left on his contract, they finally decided to let him go. San Diego, looking to enhance its offense, has agreed to only pay Castellanos $780,000 of the MLB minimum after the Phillies agreed to cover the rest.
Castellanos experienced a rocky tenure in Philadelphia, struggling both on and off the field. He made the All-Star team in 2023 but faced challenges in right field, particularly regarding his relationships with coaches and teammates.
