Southern California is bracing for a major storm. Forecasters expect thunderstorms, flooding, and gusty winds starting Sunday. Before that hits, the area will enjoy a warm, dry weekend. Meteorologist Ryan Kittell from the National Weather Service shared that an offshore flow is bringing sunny skies through Friday.
A slight dip in temperatures is likely on Saturday, followed by heavy rain beginning Sunday night into Monday. Kittell warns that this part of the storm could bring brief thunderstorms. Even a short downpour can lead to debris flows, especially in burn scar areas, according to meteorologist Carol Ciliderti.
In response to these conditions, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is issuing evacuation warnings for the Palisades and Eaton fire burn scar zones. Residents are urged to be prepared for mudflows and to evacuate if necessary.
Heavy rains, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds are anticipated through Tuesday. Moderate rain is expected across all areas, with mountain snow at higher elevations. Kittell stated, “We expect at least 1 to 2 inches of rain in coastal areas, with even more in the mountains.” Snow levels will begin above 6,000 feet but could drop in some areas as the storm progresses.
This storm may lead to increased traffic accidents due to slick roads and minor mudslides. Although no beach advisories are issued yet, there’s a strong chance of one for high surf, with waves possibly exceeding 10 feet from Monday to Thursday. The Central Coast might see the largest waves due to the incoming swells.
Meanwhile, the Bay Area is already on alert. A beach hazard warning is in place for elevated waves and strong rip currents. The region is anticipating wind gusts over 40 miles per hour in areas like Big Sur on Sunday.
Interestingly, although heavy rains are expected, Kittell notes that this storm won’t be as severe as last year’s “Pineapple Express,” which set record rainfall levels and caused significant flooding. This historical context helps us appreciate the differences in storm impacts over time.
