A historic spot on Bassett Road is back and buzzing with life. The Village Rose Deli, located at 328 Bassett Road in Bay Village, celebrated its grand opening on January 30. This deli has a long history of serving the community, and its revival brings back many memories.
Brittany Reilly, co-owner and head chef, shared that the building dates back to 1919. “It’s always been a place for people to gather,” she said. Interestingly, the electric railroad once passed through this area, making it a convenient stop.
Brittany teamed up with her best friend, Kristi Mulloy, and Kristi’s mother, Kathy Owad, who owns Grumpy’s Cafe in Tremont. Together, they brought the deli idea to life last spring. Brittany, a chef for over 20 years, wanted to blend tradition with innovation. “We want to elevate the classic deli,” she explained.
The deli has something for everyone. It features a full sandwich menu, daily soups, and an espresso bar. Brittany focuses on quality—everything from pastries to soups is made from scratch. Popular items include the hot Italian sandwich and homemade chicken salad. Plus, they offer gluten-free bread and vegetarian options.
Beyond meals, Village Rose Deli includes a small market with locally sourced goodies and select imports from Italy and France. They also host live music, wine tastings, and family events.
The renovation took nearly six months, with lots of hard work from the owners and their families. “We scrubbed every surface,” Brittany said. For her, reopening the deli represents more than just food; it’s about community. “We need a place to come together over coffee or soup,” she noted.
As more people seek local restaurants that foster community, places like Village Rose Deli thrive. Research shows that local dining experiences are increasingly valued for their ability to create connections and support local economies. In 2022, a survey by the National Restaurant Association found that 82% of adults prefer to spend their dining dollars at locally owned restaurants.
Village Rose Deli is open daily, eager to serve both old friends and new faces. For menus and updates, check out their website villagerosedeli.com or their social media pages.
