Hollywood is raising alarms over a new AI video tool called Seedance 2.0. Created by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok, this model allows users to generate brief videos using just text prompts. It’s set to be accessible through CapCut, a popular video editing app.
However, critics are concerned. Many see Seedance 2.0 as a risk to creators’ rights. The lack of safeguards means users can potentially use the likenesses of real people and famous characters. Just recently, one user posted a video featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, claiming it took only two lines of text to create it. This sparked a reaction from “Deadpool” screenwriter Rhett Reese, who commented on the dire implications for writers.
Charles Rivkin, CEO of the Motion Picture Association, has called on ByteDance to stop what he describes as massive copyright infringement. He emphasized that this tool poses a threat to millions of jobs tied to creative work in the U.S.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Human Artistry Campaign—a group comprising various Hollywood unions—has labeled Seedance 2.0 an outright attack on creators. SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, also stands firmly against the use of this technology, voicing their support for the studios.
The concerns don’t stop there. Reports indicate that Seedance has already used characters like Spider-Man and Baby Yoda in videos, prompting Disney to send a cease-and-desist letter. Disney accused ByteDance of a “virtual smash-and-grab,” claiming they unlawfully reproduced Disney’s characters and created derivative works. Interestingly, Disney has had a complicated relationship with AI, having recently signed a licensing deal with OpenAI while still combating similar issues with Google.
Paramount Pictures has joined the fray, sending a cease-and-desist letter as well. They argue that the content generated through Seedance resembles its iconic films and characters far too closely.
Overall, the controversy surrounding Seedance 2.0 highlights a growing tension between technology and traditional media. As AI continues to evolve, it remains crucial for industries to adapt and find safeguards to protect creativity and intellectual property.
