Join the Movement: How Community Climate Action is Saving Our Coral Reefs

People in Australia are stepping up to protect coral reefs from climate change, and it’s easier than you might think. The CoralWatch “What Can I Do” platform offers straightforward actions anyone can take to cut down carbon emissions and help preserve our reefs.

This platform helps you:

  • Create a personal action plan to reduce your emissions
  • Understand how different actions impact the environment
  • Find new strategies and resources
  • Encourage others to join in

Since January 2025:

  • Over 1,000 people have used the platform
  • 2,851 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been avoided—like removing 1,301 cars from the road!

Climate change is a major threat to coral reefs globally. The steps we take in our own communities are vital for reducing emissions and protecting these ecosystems.

Recent studies show that coral reefs are under increasing stress due to rising water temperatures and ocean acidity. According to the NOAA, coral bleaching events have increased dramatically over the past few decades. By making small changes in our daily lives, we can help combat this alarming trend.

So why wait? Creating your personal action plan takes just a few minutes and can make a real difference. This initiative is supported by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, along with backing from the University of Queensland.
