Exciting News: Rob Leonard Takes the Helm as Raiders’ New Defensive Coordinator!

Rob Leonard: New Defensive Coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders

Rob Leonard has stepped into the role of Defensive Coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. This marks a new chapter for Leonard, who was previously the run game coordinator and defensive line coach. With 16 years of coaching under his belt—13 of which are in the NFL—he brings valuable experience to his new position.

In Leonard’s first season as run game coordinator in 2025, the Raiders excelled defensively, allowing only 3.9 rushing yards per attempt. That put them second in the league. They also ranked third in tackles for loss, thanks in part to standout player Maxx Crosby, who made the Pro Bowl with impressive stats: 10.0 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.

In 2024, Leonard led a defensive line that recorded 20 passes defensed—the second-most in the NFL for D-line units. The team collectively logged 38 sacks that season, a strong finish with 18 of those coming in the last six games.

Looking back at 2023, the Raiders achieved 46 total sacks, their highest in over a decade. Crosby shone again, tying for first in the NFL with 23 tackles for loss and finishing sixth in sacks with 14.5. Malcolm Koonce also made strides, recording a personal best of 8.0 sacks.

Before joining the Raiders, Leonard worked with the Baltimore Ravens. His first year there saw the Ravens’ defense rank in the top five across multiple categories, including points allowed per game and rushing yards.

He also spent three years with the Miami Dolphins, during which his linebackers accumulated impressive statistics: over 329 tackles and 19.5 sacks. His time in Miami included mentoring rookie Jaelan Phillips, who set a franchise record with 8.5 sacks.

Leonard’s coaching journey started with the New York Giants, where he played a role in transforming their defense from the worst in 2015 to one of the top 10 in 2016, helping the team reach the playoffs.

At his core, Leonard is a former player, having played safety and linebacker at North Carolina State. His journey from walk-on to team leader showcases his dedication and passion for football.

With great experience and a proven track record, Rob Leonard’s promotion to Defensive Coordinator is a promising move for the Raiders as they aim to strengthen their defense in the coming seasons.
