LOS ANGELES – LMU baseball faced Tulane and lost 6-2 in a tough match at Page Stadium on Sunday.
Despite the score, freshman Andrew Mhoon stood out with an impressive debut. He went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs throughout the series, collecting a total of five hits and four RBIs. His performance shows he’s ready to make an impact at the Division I level.
LMU took an early lead in the fourth inning. Mhoon hit a single that scored Alex Gamboa, putting the Lions ahead 1-0.
However, Tulane quickly turned the game around. In the fifth inning, Hayden Pinkney hit a two-run homer after Tyler Chun’s double, giving Tulane a 2-1 advantage. Tye Wood later added a two-run shot, extending their lead to 4-1.
Tulane would score again in the eighth and ninth innings, making it 6-1. In the bottom of the ninth, LMU tried to mount a comeback. Zion Williams doubled, and Mhoon’s single brought him home, narrowing the score to 6-2. However, Tulane’s closer, Jaden Abbadessa, shut it down by striking out the next two batters.
Williams had a solid game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run. DJ Ghiorso also contributed with a double, but as a team, LMU struggled with just five hits and 19 strikeouts against Tulane’s pitching.
Tulane’s pitchers effectively silenced LMU’s offense, holding them to only two runs. The Green Wave showcased their power with three home runs.
Despite the series loss, Mhoon’s performance offers a reason for optimism. His ability to hit consistently could be crucial for LMU as they head into next week’s games.
According to a recent survey by the NCAA, over 72% of college baseball fans believe that freshmen often take time to adjust to the collegiate level. Mhoon’s strong start shows that there can be exceptions, and he could be the spark LMU needs this season.
