ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has announced plans to strengthen “safeguards” for its new AI model, Seedance 2.0. This decision comes after a significant backlash from Hollywood regarding allegations of copyright violations.
According to reports, Disney and Paramount sent cease and desist letters to ByteDance, demanding an end to the unauthorized use of their intellectual property. Disney accused the company of using its copyrighted characters in Seedance 2.0, while Paramount noted that the AI had created vivid content inspired by its iconic franchises.
In response, ByteDance told Deadline that it respects intellectual property rights and acknowledges the concerns about Seedance 2.0. They assured the public they would take action to prevent unauthorized content generation.
Seedance 2.0 was launched recently and quickly went viral, featuring realistic deepfake videos, including a fictional fight scene between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Other popular videos included alternative endings for shows like Stranger Things.
The Motion Picture Association voiced strong concerns, stating that the service had misused U.S. copyrighted materials on a massive scale, undermining the legal protections that support creators and jobs in the industry. They urged ByteDance to halt its activities immediately.
Meanwhile, the Human Artistry Campaign, which includes organizations like SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America, criticized Seedance 2.0, calling its launch a threat to creators globally. They argued that using AI to mimic human creativity dilutes cultural value and questioned the ethics behind such technology.
A recent study from the International Communications Association shows that around 70% of creators feel threatened by AI tools like Seedance 2.0. This sentiment echoes the fears that unchecked AI development may lead to more challenges in the creative world.
