Arif Khan Makes History at the Winter Olympics
Arif Mohammad Khan, a skier from Gulmarg, has become a trailblazer for India by competing in back-to-back Winter Olympics. At the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, he finished 39th in the men’s slalom with a time of 1 minute, 19.48 seconds. This event featured 96 skiers, with Switzerland’s Loïc Meillard winning gold.
Arif’s journey is about more than just results. As the first Indian to compete in two consecutive Winter Olympics, he carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony in Italy. Reflecting on his experience, Arif shared on Instagram, “If you’re an athlete, this should be your dream.”
This year also saw another notable moment for India. Stanzin Lundup from Ladakh made his Olympic debut in cross-country skiing, finishing 104th in the men’s 10 km freestyle. Despite the tough competition, both athletes are stepping stones for India’s presence in winter sports.
Arif’s path has been tough, filled with financial challenges and injuries. He spoke about his struggles: “This time, I want to perform better and compete at a higher level.” His determination inspires young athletes everywhere, showing them that dreams are achievable with hard work.
Historically, India’s journey in the Winter Olympics began with Gul Mustafa Dev, who was the first Indian to compete in 1988. His pioneering spirit set the stage for future athletes like Arif.
