PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A tragic shooting unfolded during a youth hockey game in Pawtucket on Monday, resulting in three deaths, including the shooter. Authorities reported that three others remain in critical condition.
Police Chief Tina Goncalves stated that the shooter died from a self-inflicted wound. While the investigation is ongoing, she suggested that this incident could have stemmed from a family dispute.
Details about the victims and the suspect have not been released. However, Chief Goncalves mentioned that it seems both of the deceased were adults. Investigators are collecting witness statements and reviewing video footage from the event. Some videos shared on social media show players and spectators scrambling for safety amid the chaos.
Outside the arena, emotions ran high. Families and high school hockey players comforted each other as they prepared to leave the scene. A heavy police presence surrounded the area, and helicopters hovered overhead.
This incident follows another shooting that struck Rhode Island just two months earlier, where two students were killed, and others were injured at Brown University. The shooter in that case was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien expressed sorrow over the recent tragedy, emphasizing that such violence disrupts what should have been a joyful family event.
Pawtucket is a small city, just north of Providence, with a population of nearly 80,000. Once known as the home of Hasbro, it now grapples with the repercussions of this event.
