American surfer Kurt Van Dyke was found dead in his apartment in Cahuita, Costa Rica, on Saturday, at the age of 66. Authorities received a report around 10:50 a.m. about a man found lifeless in a room, according to Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).

Law enforcement confirmed his death after arriving at the scene in Talamanca, a coastal area approximately 105 miles east of San José. Initial reports indicated that Van Dyke was with a woman when two armed men entered their home. The suspects threatened them and held them for several minutes while stealing valuables.

Tragically, Van Dyke died from asphyxiation and multiple stab wounds. The woman with him suffered minor injuries. Authorities are investigating the incident to ascertain the full circumstances and identify those responsible.

Kurt Van Dyke hailed from Santa Cruz, California, and was well-known in the surfing world for his contributions to the sport.
