On Monday afternoon, a tragic shooting unfolded at an ice rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, during a high school hockey game. Three people lost their lives, including the shooter, and three others were critically injured.
The shooting took place around 2:30 PM at Lynch Arena, where families had gathered to support their teams. The incident appears to have stemmed from a “targeted family dispute,” according to local authorities. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien described the effect on the community, emphasizing its strength and resilience in the face of this tragedy.
A local sports editor, Branden Mello, reported from the scene and highlighted a brave father from North Smithfield who intervened. He managed to wrest the weapon from the shooter, although the individual had a second gun. This act of courage may have prevented further harm.
Two adults died at the arena, and the third victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed that the shooter was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. While the ages of the deceased were not disclosed, they were related to the shooter.
Witnesses recounted the confusion and fear. According to a family member of the shooter, mental health issues may have played a role. She shared, “He shot my family, and he’s dead now,” reflecting the turmoil in the aftermath of such a shocking event.
In December, a separate shooting incident involved two students at Brown University, just a short distance away from the ice rink. Mayor Grebien stated the two events, while both devastating, were not connected.

The Providence Bruins, a local hockey team, expressed their condolences and praised the first responders. They said, “Our thoughts are with all those affected,” showcasing the community’s solidarity during this difficult time.
