This concern is echoed in unfortunate incidents where newborns have become ill from Listeria, sometimes traced back to raw milk. Dr. Yarrington recalls heartbreaking cases that remind her why such precautions are vital.

“The risk might seem small, but the consequences can be devastating,” she stresses. It’s crucial for expecting mothers to be aware of what to avoid:

– Raw milk and products made with raw milk
– Soft cheeses (like queso fresco, brie, cottage cheese)
– Deli meats and hot dogs
– Pre-packaged, pre-cut vegetables
