Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has launched India’s first private helicopter assembly line for the Airbus H125 in Vemagal, Karnataka. This event was marked by a virtual inauguration led by Prime Minister Modi and French President Macron. Key figures like Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin were also in attendance.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, highlighted that this development supports India’s “AatmaNirbhar Bharat” initiative, signifying a major step toward self-reliance in aerospace. By manufacturing the H125 and its military variant, H125M, in Vemagal, Tata and Airbus are ensuring that Indian operators have quick access to advanced technology and local support services.
Airbus Helicopters’ CEO, Bruno Even, noted that this assembly line offers a competitive edge for the Indian market. He emphasized that it enhances India’s capabilities in both civil and military aviation. The facility is expected to meet various needs, from emergency medical services to law enforcement.
The H125 is well-known for its remarkable achievements, including being the only helicopter ever to land on Mount Everest. This makes it particularly suited for operations in challenging conditions, such as in the high-altitude regions where the Indian military often operates.
Recent statistics show that the H125 is the best-selling single-engine helicopter in the world, with more than 40 million flight hours logged globally. It is also the most popular helicopter model in India and South Asia.
The first Indian-made H125 is set to be delivered by early 2027, and it will also be available for export throughout South Asia. This assembly line follows another successful collaboration between Tata and Airbus that established a military transport assembly line, furthering India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
These steps are paving the way for a robust aerospace ecosystem in India, focusing on local production, technology transfer, and skill development. This initiative not only boosts the economy but also enhances national security and readiness.
