Over the past 15 months, more than 2,000 farmers in Gombe State have benefited from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project. Dr. Sani Jauro, the state coordinator, shared insights about the positive impact of the project on agriculture during a recent interview.
Jauro emphasized that climate change poses serious threats to farmers and the food supply. With this in mind, it’s crucial to empower farmers by providing them with tools to adapt. ACReSAL supports local farmers with climate-resilient seeds and essential agricultural inputs to improve food security and productivity.
To date, around 55 groups of farmers have received drought-resistant seedlings that help them cope with unpredictable weather patterns. These specially designed seeds can flourish even during late or insufficient rainfall, allowing farmers to achieve better harvests.
Moreover, ACReSAL is modernizing farming practices in the region. They have introduced tractors that help reduce manual labor, enabling farmers to cultivate larger areas more efficiently. What used to take weeks of back-breaking work can now be done in a fraction of the time, which is especially important given the pressing challenges of climate change.
The project is also enhancing irrigation efforts. Rehabilitation of the Balanga Dam Canal is underway, promising to facilitate year-round farming for local communities. This would not only stabilize food supplies but could also lead to lower market prices and more job opportunities.
In addition to these advancements, ACReSAL is nurturing agricultural professionals through a training hub for extension specialists. This initiative aims to equip them with the latest knowledge and skills, ensuring they can effectively support farmers. They can assess soil health, interpret environmental signs, and provide timely advice, which is vital for farming success.
Support from Gombe State’s government, particularly from Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has been instrumental in making these initiatives possible. The collaborative effort aims to enhance food security, water management, and environmental health in the region.
As the climate crisis continues to evolve, these efforts highlight the importance of resilience in agriculture. A well-prepared farming community is essential for maintaining food supplies and supporting livelihoods in the face of changing environmental conditions.
