NC State recently delivered a stunning victory against Carolina, winning 82-58 in Raleigh. This marked their biggest win in this rivalry since 1969, a time well before man set foot on the moon.
The Tar Heels were missing key players, Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar. Historically, this was only the third time the team played without both top scorers in ACC history. The previous games were a win over Pitt and a 1978 loss against NC State when stars Phil Ford and Mike O’Koren were also out.
Despite this, the Tar Heels struggled on both ends of the court. They attempted 33 three-pointers but managed to sink only five, shooting just 15.2% from beyond the arc. They found some success with two-point shots, hitting 14 of 27, but didn’t focus enough on this option, especially with their best scorers sidelined. The team recorded 12 turnovers, a stark contrast to NC State’s three.
NC State exploited Carolina’s weaknesses, particularly in rim protection. They scored effectively in the paint, ending the game with 40 points there. The Pack shot 48.4% from the field and connected on 45% of their three-point attempts.
For Carolina, Zayden High stood out, contributing 10 points in the first half and finishing with a double-double: 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jarin Stevenson also played well, adding seven points and seven rebounds early on. However, the Tar Heels had a dismal first half, with a field goal shooting percentage of just 25%.
In the first 20 minutes, Carolina managed only two assists on eight field goals. They improved slightly in the second half, but the initial poor performance had already sealed their fate.
Freshman point guard Derek Dixon has been struggling lately, hitting only 4 of his last 26 shots in three games. Other backcourt players, like Seth Trimble, also had rough outings.
Dean Smith once remarked that a team could cover for a missing key player for just one game. The Tar Heels proved that this time, they didn’t have enough depth to compete effectively against a strong NC State team.
This loss puts the Tar Heels in a tough spot for the ACC Tournament. They’re currently sitting at 8-5 in the standings and need to perform better to secure a favorable position.
Next up is a crucial game against Syracuse on Saturday, where the focus needs to be on improving performance, regardless of who’s on the court.
