Nicholls State University Baseball Faces Tough Loss Against South Alabama
Nicholls State University’s baseball team put up a fierce fight but ultimately lost to the University of South Alabama, 7-5. This game took place at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday night.
After a sluggish start, which saw Nicholls trailing 7-1 after seven innings, the team rallied, scoring four runs in the eighth inning. Hudson Mattox kicked things off with a walk, followed by Casey Artigues, who hit a single. A pitching change brought in a new player for South Alabama, but Nicholls kept the pressure on. Jaxon Milam also walked, loading the bases for the Colonels.
Clayton Pourciau drove in Mattox with a solid hit, reinforcing his strong performance that night. Although a strikeout followed, Keegan Giger stepped up to hit a three-run double to left field, bringing Nicholls much closer to a win.
Nicholls finished the game with a total of nine hits. Pourciau stood out with three hits, while Artigues added two to the count. Giger and several others contributed as well.
On the pitching side, the Colonels racked up 11 strikeouts. Shaydon Benson, the starting pitcher, led with five strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Peyton Lacy struck out three in 1.1 innings, and Owen Schexnaydre also helped with one strikeout in his 1.1 innings. The team’s final two innings saw no hits allowed by pitchers Kaul Perkins and Dalton Hill.
The Colonels aim to bounce back soon. They will face No. 2 LSU at Alex Box Stadium on February 18 at 1 p.m. Following this game, they’ll return home to take on the University of Tennessee – Martin in a four-game series from February 20-22.
Recent statistics show that Nicholls has struggled early in the season, falling to an 0-4 record. In contrast, South Alabama showcased its strength with solid pitching and timely hitting. Fans are eager to see if Nicholls can turn things around in their upcoming matches.
