Nestor Breaks Rebound Record in Thrilling Victory Over UAB – UNT Women’s Basketball Shines

Denton, Texas – Senior forward Megan Nestor made history by breaking the single-season rebounding record for the UNT women’s basketball team. The Mean Green dominated UAB, winning 84-54 at the Super Pit on Tuesday night. Nestor needed just six rebounds to surpass Sharon Shelton’s old record of 364, set during the 1977-78 season. She reached that milestone by the third quarter’s 8:50 mark. By the end of the night, she had tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds, marking her 17th double-double this season and bringing her total to 373 rebounds.

With four games left in the regular season, Nestor is now targeting the American Conference record of 418 rebounds, held by Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu of South Florida since 2023. Her recent performance has been impressive—she’s recorded double-doubles in 12 of her last 13 games, averaging 13.7 points and 16.6 rebounds in conference play.

Reflecting on her achievement, Nestor shared, “Coming from the NAIA level, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to do it. It feels really special.”

The team’s recent success, winning four out of five games and three in a row at home, displays their growing strength. Notably, five players reached double digits in scoring, and the Mean Green defense limited UAB to just 54 points, forcing 19 turnovers. They also matched their best with only six turnovers for the game, not committing any in the second half.

Aysia Proctor led all scorers with 22 points, shooting an impressive 9-of-16 from the field. Since league play started, she has been hitting nearly 41% of her three-point attempts while averaging 15.6 points per game. Andi Schissler also contributed significantly with 13 points, including three shots from beyond the arc.

Point guards Cherie Spencer and Jazzy Owens-Barnett combined for a strong outing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, yet only had one turnover between them.

Head coach Jason Burton praised the team’s performance, saying, “I thought this was one of our most complete games this year. The energy and attention to detail were outstanding.”

Looking ahead, UNT will aim for their third consecutive win against Charlotte. The game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. CT and will be available on ESPN+ and through the Varsity Network App.

In recent college basketball trends, effective teamwork and strategic gameplay have emerged as key factors for success. According to a report from the NCAA, teams that prioritize ball movement and defensive pressure significantly increase their chances of victory. This focus on tactical play is clearly reflected in UNT’s current performance.
