Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Safran Electronics & Defense have joined forces in a new venture aimed at producing advanced smart weapons in India. This partnership, signed in Bengaluru during the 6th India–France Annual Defence Dialogue, is set to create a joint company focused on the Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range (HAMMER) system.
This deal was finalized by Manoj Jain and Alexander Ziegler with prominent figures, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in attendance. While exciting, the joint venture still needs approval from regulatory bodies in both countries.
Along with the Joint Venture Agreement, they also established a Master Production Agreement. This outlines how production will gradually shift to India. The joint venture will focus on making, supplying, and maintaining the HAMMER system, which is vital for the Indian Air Force and Navy.
This project is part of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aiming for self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The partnership promises to boost local production, cut down on imports, and strengthen India’s defense capabilities. As production ramps up, key components like electronics and mechanical parts will be made locally.
The HAMMER is known for its precision and versatility, compatible with multiple aircraft, including the Rafale and LCA Tejas. This collaboration capitalizes on Safran’s expertise in smart weaponry while enhancing BEL’s contributions to India’s defense industry.
