Florida Congressional Democrats Slam Governor DeSantis Over Cuts to Food Assistance Programs

Florida Democrats are criticizing Governor Ron DeSantis for refusing to provide food assistance to needy children. This marks the second year in a row that he has opted out of the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program, also known as “Sun Bucks.” This program helps families buy groceries during the summer break when school meals are unavailable.

Democrats expressed their disappointment, highlighting that Summer EBT is crucial for combating hunger among low-income kids and teens. They pointed out that it gives families a prepaid card to shop for food during the summer months.

In 2024, around 2.2 million children in Florida were eligible for these benefits, but the state chose not to participate. This decision meant that families missed out on $259 million in much-needed support. The Democrats argued that this is a serious failure to aid those in need.

They believe Governor DeSantis and the Republican-led legislature are not prioritizing the needs of families and children in Florida. They stress that the state has the resources and means to do better. “Florida’s families deserve better,” they said.

As of January 1, 2025, Florida officially missed its last chance to join the Summer EBT program for 2025, despite ongoing requests and offers of support from the USDA.
