IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team had an exciting Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific University. They secured a comeback win in the final game, providing a thrilling end to the series.
In the first match, HPU took control, winning 6-1. Dominic Nunes started strong, throwing a perfect first inning. The young pitcher, Caden Miller, joined him, allowing no hits in his first two innings and racking up three strikeouts. A nice double play led by shortstop Isaiah Walz helped keep the game in reach. Sawyer Voortman added an RBI single, bringing the score to 2-1, but HPU eventually extended their lead.
The second game was different. It was a nail-biter from start to finish. Wyatt Madison tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single. HPU struck first in extra innings, leading 2-1. But CUI battled back. Nolan Caira’s fielder’s choice brought Walz home, tying it again. Then, a wild pitch allowed Madison to sprint home, securing the win 3-2 for CUI.
Shane Timmons came in as relief and played a significant role in the victory. His pitching in extra innings kept the Sharks from extending their lead, giving the team a chance to turn the tables.
CUI’s record improved to 7-9 overall, and they sit at 5-3 in the conference. Following this series, the Golden Eagles are headed to Northern California to face Jessup and Menlo next week.
