A skier has tragically died at Northstar California Resort in Truckee, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The man, identified as 21-year-old Colin Kang from Fremont, was off duty and skiing when he was reported missing Wednesday night.
Search efforts began after deputies discovered Kang’s vehicle in the parking lot. They confirmed he had not returned from his skiing trip. Unfortunately, he was found deceased around 9 a.m. the next day on the Sugar Pine Glade trail.
Tara Schoedinger, the general manager of Northstar, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “We are heartbroken by this loss,” she said, extending sympathy to Kang’s family and coworkers.
This incident is part of a worrying trend at Northstar. It’s the third death reported this month. A 53-year-old man died from a collision with another skier just days earlier, and a 26-year-old man lost his life in a skiing accident earlier in February.
Skiing accidents can occur due to various factors, including terrain difficulty and weather conditions. Statistics show that skiing remains one of the safest sports, yet the risks increase with challenging trails. According to the National Ski Areas Association, there were approximately 42 million visits to ski resorts across the U.S. in recent years, but fatalities are still rare.
