Rivian has rolled out a new software update for its R1S and R1T electric vehicles, and it comes with exciting improvements. This update, version 2026.03, is designed to enhance the driving experience for both new and existing models.
One of the key features is the introduction of Sport Mode. Previously available only for high-performance versions, it’s now available for the base Dual-Motor models as well. This mode optimizes power delivery, making the vehicles quicker and more responsive. It also adjusts the ride height to a “Standard” level while in Sport Mode, improving overall performance.
Another big addition is the Launch Mode, which helps the vehicle accelerate rapidly from a standstill. This feature has been extended to older Quad-Motor models and both generations of Dual-Motor Performance vehicles. To use Launch Mode, drivers activate Sport Mode, press a flag icon, and simultaneously hold the brake and accelerator.
For those seeking convenience, Rivian has introduced a new Apple Watch app. It allows owners to control their vehicles without needing a car key or smartphone. With this update, Gen 1 owners can lock and unlock their vehicles just by tapping their Apple Watch. This feature connects through Bluetooth, making it handy and straightforward.
Rivian has also made improvements for colder climates. The update adds an indicator showing how much energy the vehicle uses to keep the battery warm. A new graphic will appear if some range is temporarily unavailable due to the battery not being at optimal temperature. Additionally, the battery management system has been enhanced for more efficient warming during charging, which helps recover range.
In the broader context, Rivian’s ongoing updates reflect a growing trend in the electric vehicle industry, where software improvements can be just as crucial as hardware upgrades. A recent survey found that nearly 60% of EV owners believe software features are as important as the vehicle’s physical capabilities. This highlights the shift towards smart technology in cars.
As Rivian continues to evolve, it’s evident that software and tech integration will play a critical role in attracting and retaining customers. With major plans looming in the EV space, Rivian stands as a prime example of how combining great technology with user-focused innovations can redefine the driving experience.
