A Utah company has issued a recall for a specific batch of its freeze-dried chicken nuggets for cats. The product, known as Quest Cat Food Chicken Recipe Freeze-Dried Nuggets, may contain low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is crucial for feline health.
The recalled item comes in a 10-ounce ziplock bag, marked with lot code C25288 and UPC 6-91730-18103-1. It has a best-by date of October 15, 2027. This lot was distributed to stores in various states, including Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Rhode Island, Michigan, California, Texas, and Illinois, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
So far, the company has received one report of a cat showing symptoms of illness after consuming this food. Fortunately, after veterinary intervention, that cat has recovered. The veterinarian tested the food and found the thiamine deficiency.
Thiamine is essential for cats, helping them break down carbohydrates and support brain function. A lack of this vitamin can lead to serious health issues. Signs of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, vomiting, and weight loss. In more severe cases, neurological symptoms can arise, such as wobbly walking, vision issues, and even seizures.
