Even if sports aren’t your thing, GOAT has plenty to keep you hooked. The story follows Will Harris, voiced by Caleb McLaughlin, a determined teen who dreams of being a professional roarball player. Despite facing huge challenges—like being a goat in a high-stakes sport—Will’s mother, Louise (Jennifer Hudson), encourages him to aim high.
As Will juggles work at a diner and his passion for roarball, he looks up to his idol, Jett (Gabrielle Union), the star player of his hometown team, the Vineland Thorns. Life isn’t easy for Will; he struggles to pay rent while caring for his friends, Hannah the aardwolf (Sherry Cola) and Daryl the capybara (Eduardo Franco).
In a bid to cover his rent, Will sells his prized sneakers only to lose that money in a game against the cocky horse, Mane Attraction (Aaron Pierre). The Thorns haven’t won a championship in a decade. After another loss, Jett tells Flo (Jenifer Lewis), their team owner, to shake things up to secure a win.
When a video of Will’s game with Mane Attraction goes viral, Flo signs him onto the Vineland Thorns. Will’s dream comes true as he joins a colorful team, including Olivia the ostrich (Nicola Coughlan) and Lenny the rapper giraffe (Stephen Curry).
Initially stuck on the bench, Will finally gets a chance to prove himself when Jett is sidelined due to injury. He makes the winning goal, and as the team warms up to him, they learn crucial lessons about teamwork and sacrifice.
The animation is stunning, bringing the vibrant city of Vineland to life with energetic games. The characters, while animals, retain some hilarious quirks—like Olivia putting her head in the sand and Rusty the bat (Bobby Lee) reacting comically to other commentary.
Experts stress the importance of storytelling in animation, noting that it can inspire kids to pursue their dreams and understand teamwork. Recent reports indicate that family animated films consistently draw large audiences, showing that stories like GOAT resonate across generations.
With its vibrant colors, catchy music, and relatable messages, GOAT is a delightful mix that offers more than just a sports story. It’s a journey of dreams, adversity, and the joy of friendship that entertains everyone.
GOAT is currently running in theaters.
