On Friday, March 27, students from across Mississippi will gather at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus for the 20th annual Mississippi Science Olympiad (MSO). They’ll compete from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., wrapping up with an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.
The MSO is a series of challenging academic events designed to boost science education and spark interest in STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Throughout the year, students prepare in teams, tackling a wide range of activities. The event not only celebrates student achievements but also highlights the work of their teachers.
Dr. Allison Downing, who directs the MSO and teaches at the Southern Miss School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences, emphasizes the value of collaboration and critical thinking in these competitions. “Students engaging in MSO experience STEM in a way that traditional classrooms may not provide,” she explains. Participants can choose from diverse topics, from entomology and geology to forensics and engineering challenges like building helicopters or electric vehicles.
Winning teams in both middle and high school categories will earn the chance to compete at the National Science Olympiad, happening May 22–23 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In recent years, participation in science competitions like the MSO has surged. A 2022 survey revealed that more schools are incorporating STEM programs, with over 60% of educators recognizing the importance of hands-on experiences for student engagement. This reflects a broader trend where schools aim to foster innovation and problem-solving skills in their students.
The MSO not only helps students but also strengthens community ties. Volunteers, including parents and local businesses, play a crucial role in making the event successful. Their support reflects a collective belief in the power of STEM education to shape future leaders.
