A recent survey in Chennai shows that climate change is a big concern. Conducted by Climate Trends, a non-profit organization, the study involved 2,000 residents. The results reveal that about 85% see climate change as a real threat to their health and the city’s infrastructure.
The survey highlights major issues like heatwaves, flooding, and water scarcity. Extreme heat is the most common problem, affecting 80% of participants, while 70% struggle with water stress. Interestingly, many residents support actions to combat these issues. About 75% want restrictions on polluting vehicles, and 70% are in favor of subsidies for electric cars.
Trust in information regarding climate change is highest among scientists (67%) and the government (60%). However, 56% of respondents admitted they hadn’t received any climate-related updates in the last six months. Most people prefer to receive warnings and advisories digitally, especially through platforms like WhatsApp.
Geographically, North Chennai is facing severe heat and water issues, worsened by industrial activities and a lack of proper infrastructure. East Chennai often deals with flooding and power outages, while Central Chennai experiences problems with heat and water shortages. South Chennai is also struggling with increasing water stress tied to rapid urban growth.
The findings point towards a pressing need for climate resilience strategies and better communication channels for residents. As climate change impacts continue to escalate, addressing these concerns becomes crucial.
