Byron Storer Joins the Browns as Special Teams Coordinator
Byron Storer is the new special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. Before this role, he spent four seasons with the Green Bay Packers as their assistant special teams coach, totaling 12 years in the NFL.
Storer’s journey is quite interesting. He played at Cal and had a brief stint in the NFL before moving into coaching. After stepping away from coaching for a while, he worked in business but returned to football, learning under the renowned Rich Bisaccia. According to Browns’ coach Todd Monken, Storer’s interview was impressive, and it was clear that he was ready for this chance.
During his time with the Packers from 2022 to 2024, Storer helped the team achieve impressive kickoff return numbers. They averaged 26.0 yards, the best in team history for three years. The Packers also led the league with 28 kickoff returns of 30-plus yards during this span. This level of performance hasn’t been seen since 2010-2012. They ranked sixth in the league for field-position margin, highlighting their effectiveness on special teams.
Before the Packers, Storer was with the Raiders from 2018 to 2021. His work there led to standout performances, including punter A.J. Cole leading the league with a 50.0 yards per punt average in 2021. Kicker Daniel Carlson set a franchise record with 150 points in one season, including 40 successful field goals.
Storer took a break from coaching between 2014 and 2017 to help run his family’s transportation business in San Francisco. As general manager, he worked with some of the biggest tech companies, showcasing his versatility beyond football.
His coaching career began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an assistant special teams coach, where he helped improve their field goal success rates significantly. He also spent time with the San Diego Chargers, where his efforts contributed to a remarkable improvement in starting field position for their opponents after kickoffs.
Storer’s background as a player adds depth to his coaching style. He played as a fullback for the Buccaneers from 2007 to 2009 before an injury cut his career short.
With this mix of coaching experience and player insight, Byron Storer brings a wealth of knowledge to the Browns. As the NFL evolves, teams increasingly recognize the importance of special teams in securing victories. Analysts believe that excellent special teams play can significantly impact game outcomes.
