Authorities are looking into a tragic avalanche in Lake Tahoe, California, that claimed at least eight lives. This tragedy unfolded as a group of skiers and their guides returned from a three-day backcountry skiing trip. The Nevada County sheriff mentioned that they’re working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to investigate potential criminal negligence.
The avalanche was the deadliest in California’s recent history, with one skier still missing and presumed dead. Blackbird Mountain Guides employed the guides involved and reported that three of their team members were among those who died. Zeb Blais, the founder of Blackbird, expressed deep sorrow for the loss and emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the affected families and staff.
As the group was wrapping up their trip, avalanche warnings were already in effect. A social media post from Blackbird hinted they were aware of the risky conditions. Sheriff Shannan Moon stated that part of the investigation will focus on why the trip wasn’t canceled despite the warnings.
Six of the skiers survived thanks to rescue efforts, but challenging weather has delayed the recovery of those who perished. “Adverse weather and ongoing avalanche risks have complicated the recovery,” the sheriff’s office reported.
Family members have confirmed the identities of six victims, which include Carrie Atkin, Liz Clabaugh, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar, and Kate Vitt. These individuals were known to frequently ski together.
While ski trips can be thrilling, safety cannot be overlooked. According to a study by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, more than 25,000 people visit the backcountry each year despite inherent dangers.
