Bill Mazeroski, the man behind one of the most iconic home runs in baseball history, has passed away at the age of 89. He died on February 20, 2023. Mazeroski is likely to be remembered for his unforgettable walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting reflected on Mazeroski’s legacy, saying, “Maz was one of a kind, a true Pirates legend, and one of the finest defensive second basemen ever.” Mazeroski was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, celebrating a remarkable career that included seven All-Star selections.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred remarked on Mazeroski’s influence, stating, “His bat delivered the first walk-off, series-ending home run in World Series history.” This home run sealed the Pirates’ victory over the Yankees, a moment etched in baseball lore. Yet, it was Mazeroski’s defensive skills that helped him secure his place in the Hall of Fame. He believed that saving runs was just as crucial as driving them in, showing a well-rounded approach to the game.
Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor shared his thoughts, highlighting Mazeroski’s combination of powerful hitting and defensive mastery. He said, “Maz gave us one of the greatest home runs in baseball history and set records as one of the best defensive second basemen.” Mazeroski holds multiple records, including leading the league in assists for nine seasons and in double plays for eight seasons, with a staggering 161 double plays in 1966 alone.
In 2010, the Pirates honored him with a statue at PNC Park, further cementing his legacy in the city. Just last year, Mazeroski was part of the inaugural class of the Pirates Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on the franchise.
Mazeroski leaves behind his two sons, Darren and David, and four grandchildren. His life’s work in baseball continues to inspire fans and players alike, reminding everyone of the joy and excitement that sports can bring.
