This weekend at the box office, it’s a big showdown between successful films and those struggling to find their footing.
In the success category, we have GOAT from Sony Pictures Animation and Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Both are neck-and-neck, with estimates showing they could each earn between $13 million and $15 million.
Wuthering Heights recently triumphed over the Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend, bringing in $32.8 million in three days and $37.5 million over four. Its overseas performance was impressive too, with $45.5 million from 75 markets, leading to an outstanding global total of $83 million.
Warner Bros. predicts Wuthering Heights will outperform GOAT again, aiming for a worldwide total around $150 million. In the U.S., both films are expected to pull in about $14 million each from nearly 3,700 theaters. GOAT, which debuted to $35 million last weekend, is now playing in over 3,800 venues but is rolling out more slowly internationally.
Among the new arrivals, Lionsgate’s faith-driven sequel, I Can Only Imagine 2, is expected to land in third place with around $8 million to $9 million. It received an A+ CinemaScore from viewers, which is promising, though it opened with about half the earnings of its predecessor from 2018.
Meanwhile, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is generating buzz with its limited run, racking up $3.2 million in just 325 IMAX screens. The film showcases 59 hours of unseen footage from Elvis’s concerts, creating great excitement among fans.
In a close competition for sixth place, How to Make a Killing—a black comedy featuring Glen Powell—looks set to earn around $3 million but has been criticized by many. It plays in fewer theaters than its competition but still manages to capture attention.
Unfortunately, Psycho Killer, a much-anticipated slasher directed by Gavin Polone, is struggling and may earn only $1.4 million to $1.6 million. With a dismal critics score of zero on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is unlikely to make it into the top 10.
Among the returning favorites, Amazon MGM Studios’ Crime 101 is tracking to be fourth, while Send Help holds steady in fifth place. Disney’s Zootopia 2 is celebrating a significant milestone after crossing $400 million domestically. This animated blockbuster not only became the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide but also stands as the greatest animated film ever made, with a jaw-dropping $1.83 billion in ticket sales globally.
