The Lagos State Government recently addressed rumors about the return of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise. On February 21, 2026, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that no official start date has been set.
During a project inspection, Wahab mentioned that discussions with key stakeholders are ongoing. He initially planned to kick off a sensitization program last week, but logistical issues delayed those efforts. “We need to agree on a suitable day with everyone involved,” he explained.
Wahab remains hopeful that the sanitation exercise will resume soon, and confirmed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will announce the official date. Meanwhile, he encouraged residents to continue their daily activities without disruption, assuring them they’ll be informed well before the program starts again.
Historically, the sanitation exercise took place on the last Saturday of each month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. However, it was put on hold in November 2016 due to a legal ruling that restricted movement during the cleanup. In recent years, rising waste management issues, such as blocked drainage and littering, have led many residents to call for its revival.
A recent survey indicated that 78% of Lagosians believe the return of the monthly sanitation would improve cleanliness in their neighborhoods. Experts in environmental management support this view, stating that regular sanitation helps maintain public health and reduces flooding risks.
