Miranda has some unique geological features that suggest past activity. The moon is only 470 km (about 290 miles) wide, but the study estimates it could have had an ocean over 100 km deep at one point. Recently, researchers used computer models to simulate its history and found that while some of this ocean may have frozen, heat generated by tidal forces could mean that liquid water still exists beneath the ice.

Why does this matter? Water is crucial for life as we know it. However, just having water doesn’t guarantee life. As Dr. Mary Gade, a planetary scientist, notes, “While the presence of liquid water is exciting, we need more evidence to confirm whether it’s suitable for life.” She also adds that understanding these moons gives us critical insight into how life could evolve in different environments.

Recent surveys show that public interest in the search for extraterrestrial life is booming. A 2022 poll found that nearly 70% of Americans believe life exists beyond Earth. This growing curiosity aligns with advancements in space exploration, leading to increased investment in missions targeting these icy worlds.
