Dave Grohl recently shared insights about Josh Freese’s departure from Foo Fighters. The decision to move on from Freese was a thoughtful one, made over several months by the whole band.
In a chat with Zane Lowe, Grohl explained their internal discussions following Freese’s exit last year. Freese, who joined the band in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’ passing, announced on Instagram that he was let go as the band decided to explore a “different direction” without him.
Grohl emphasized that the band took their time. “In those six or seven months, we talked about what to do next,” he said. They finally decided to reach out to Freese.
“It wasn’t just me. All of us made the call,” Grohl added. Their conversation was appreciative, acknowledging Freese’s contributions. Grohl mentioned, “We said, ‘Hey man, that was awesome, but we are going to move on.’”
After their call, the band chose to keep everything quiet. “We didn’t make a press release or tweet anything,” Grohl noted. “But there’s been a lot of talk since then.” He reflected on Freese’s feelings, indicating that the drummer didn’t feel the band’s music resonated with him, which Grohl deemed important.
Since leaving Foo Fighters, Freese has rejoined Nine Inch Nails and stepped in for Weezer in Australia.
As Foo Fighters gear up for their 12th studio album, Your Favorite Toy, set to come out on April 24, Grohl described the title track as a turning point. “It really was the key that unlocked the tone and energy of the album,” he explained. They crafted this track after experimenting with various sounds for a year.
Looking ahead, Foo Fighters have an exciting stadium tour planned in Australia and New Zealand from November 2026 to January 2027.
Freese’s time with the band was crucial as they navigated the challenges following Hawkins’ unexpected death in 2022. With changes underway and new opportunities arising, Grohl’s remarks shed light on the band’s evolution and their drive for fresh musical directions.
