George Mason Softball had a mixed day in their home opener at the GMU Softball Complex. They started strong, beating Hofstra 6-3, but then lost to FDU 4-1.
In the first game against Hofstra, the Patriots showcased their hitting skills, collecting eight hits. Logan Pickford opened the scoring in the second inning with a single, leading to Kaleigh Friend’s double and an unearned run. Madi Sobota then hit a two-RBI triple, giving the Patriots a solid 3-0 lead.
Hofstra fought back, scoring three runs in the fourth inning, but George Mason quickly responded. They scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning, with Jessica Chan getting two RBIs. Bri Lencz pitched well, allowing three runs over three innings, while Abbey Lane shut out Hofstra for four innings.
In their second game against FDU, things didn’t go as smoothly. FDU scored first and the Patriots struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Alyssa Rangel pitched six innings, allowing three runs but only one earned run, and she also stepped up offensively with two hits and one RBI. However, the innings slipped away, and FDU closed the game with a final run.
As George Mason looks ahead, they are set to travel to Greenville, SC, for the Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman. Their upcoming matches promise to be exciting.
