RED BLUFF, California — A new community food stand has opened in Tehama County, offering free food to those in need. This initiative is the first of its kind in the area and is located just outside Red Bluff.
One Seed at a Time, a local non-profit started by county farmers, aims to improve food access for residents. Priscilla Burke, a leader of the organization, believes that community food stands are vital in making healthy food available to everyone.
“Food prices are too high, and no one should have to struggle to eat,” Burke stated. Many families in the county face challenges with poverty and food insecurity. She emphasized that fresh food should be accessible to all.
The newly installed food stand is situated on the property of one of their members and is ready to serve the community. The stand will offer seeds, gardening tips, and non-perishable food items. Additionally, there’s a small herb garden and some fruit trees for everyone to enjoy.
Burke encourages community members to contribute by donating excess produce they may have, whether it’s from a garden or food they cannot use. The goal is to create more stands in various locations, starting with places where they have already set up gardens, such as the PATH Men’s Shelter and Sacred Heart Parish School.
