This week, many in northern and western Europe are about to enjoy an early taste of spring. Some areas in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands may see temperatures nearing 20°C (68°F). In south-western France, it’s expected to hit around 25°C.
This warmth is thanks to a unique weather pattern. A low-pressure system over the Atlantic is working with a strong high pressure over central Europe. This combination is pushing mild air across the continent, creating temperatures 10-15°C above what we usually expect this time of year.
While this warmer weather is a welcome break for many, particularly after a wet February, parts of Portugal and north-western Spain should brace for more heavy rain.
Meanwhile, the southeastern U.S. is facing a very different scenario. States like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are looking at temperatures 10-15°C below their normal levels, leading to chilly and frosty nights.
In Miami, temperatures could drop to around 7°C on Tuesday morning. This drop is significant enough for iguanas, which can become “cold-stunned” and fall from trees. They are considered an invasive species in Florida, and residents have been encouraged to humanely capture these reptiles during cold spells.
The frigid conditions in the southeast are linked to a powerful low-pressure area moving up the east coast. Such storms, known as Nor’easters, can bring strong north-easterly winds to states like Connecticut and New Jersey.
The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings as snow began falling on Sunday night. By Monday, places like New York City and Boston could see total snow amounts reach up to 60 cm (25 inches) with wind gusts hitting 50 mph.
It’s important to note that this winter has already been notably cold and snowy across much of the U.S., potentially becoming the snowiest winter since 2018. A recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirms a trend in increased snowfall during winter months, likely due to changing climate patterns.
