You can’t spell community without ‘u’ and ‘i,’ and that’s true for the LGBTQ+ community in Macon.
One significant event that brings people together is the Middle Georgia Safe Space Supper, held monthly at Startup Studios. This gathering is all about good food, fun games, and making new friends. Caroline Exum, who has attended twice, shared her thoughts: “I love meeting people I wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
The atmosphere is always lively. At a recent supper, friends and families enjoyed delicious food from local vendors like Grow Fresh Local Food and Kory’s Cupcakes, adding to the sense of community.
Colby Cirami-Robinson, the founder of the supper, came up with the idea while wishing for a more inclusive social scene. “I initially hoped for 15-20 people, but I’ve had up to 60 at some events. The response has exceeded my expectations!” he said.
Fun activities, like bingo, offer more than just entertainment. A local business, the Bohemian Den, even donated a $25 gift card as a prize.
Live art also made an impact at the event, with artist EHTH.X Illustrations capturing the joyful moments through caricatures. Cirami-Robinson emphasized the connections being formed, noting that many attendees have forged friendships beyond the event.
In recent years, gatherings like this have risen in popularity, reflecting a broader shift toward community engagement in many cities. A 2022 survey by the Human Rights Campaign found that 72% of LGBTQ+ individuals believe social events foster a sense of belonging, highlighting the importance of spaces where people can come together.
The next Middle Georgia Safe Space Supper is planned for March, with a kickball game on the horizon for late April. If you want to keep up with future events, check out the Middle Georgia Safe Space Supper Facebook group.
This event illustrates the powerful connections formed in shared spaces. It’s not just a supper; it’s a chance to build lasting memories and friendships in a supportive environment.
